Three teenage suspects are in custody after “horrific and brazen” dual attacks that began with the rape of a woman at gunpoint in front of her children in a popular south Minneapolis park and ended when they were caught while raping two teenage girls in a nearby garage later that evening, police said.

The three suspects — boys ages 14, 15 and 16 — were arrested in connection with the stranger attacks Wednesday evening in Powderhorn Park, police said. A handgun used in both incidents was recovered, said police Sgt. William Palmer, adding that authorities are looking for two other boys who were present during the park assault.

The 45-year-old victim was cross-country skiing in the park with her 10-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter at 7:30 p.m. when they were accosted by the boys, who raped and robbed the woman, police said. The attackers talked about sexually assaulting the woman’s daughter but fled after the woman told them she wasn’t going to let that happen, Palmer said.

“Her actions were very admirable,” he said. “It sounded like she was going to do whatever it took to protect her daughter.”

Minneapolis park police tracked the alleged attackers’ footprints in the snow to a garage facing an alley in the 3200 block of Bloomington Avenue, about three blocks away from Powderhorn Park. It was 9:15 p.m. when officers interrupted the rape of two girls, aged 16 and 18, in the garage.

Police say the two victims had been walking near Bloomington Avenue and E. 33rd Street when they were approached by the suspects and ordered into the garage.

The suspects, who have not yet been charged, are being held on suspicion of rape, aggravated robbery and false imprisonment.

Authorities are also looking for two other boys who were present during the park assault. Police did not release their descriptions.
